We're in the process of telling ya'll how we got here. Boy, Do We Have Some Stories To Tell
Hi folks, David and Amy here from B52 BBQ! We figured it was about time we shared our story with y’all, and it goes a little something like this. It all started back in 2018 when we got the notion that we wanted to grow produce and sell it roadside. Since both of us were still working full-time jobs, we had to come up with a way to sell our farm goods without being there all day to mind the stand. So, we hatched a plan to build ourselves something like a mobile produce vending machine. We bought a 6' x 12' trailer from Ryan Clark down at Put-N-Around Golf Carts in Villa Rica, closed it in with corral boards from Home Depot, added some shelves, and just like that — BAM — we were in business! The next problem was figuring out how folks would pay while we were off at work. We took an old antique milk crate we had picked up somewhere and filled it with tennis balls that we had cut slits into. Then we mounted a bird’s head on the side of the trailer, right above the crate, with a hole for its mouth that led down into a drop box inside the trailer. The idea was simple: folks would pick out what they wanted, tuck their money inside a tennis ball, and drop it into the bird’s mouth. The whole setup ran on the honor system, and wouldn’t you know it, it worked mighty well. Plenty of nights, when we’d swing by after work to close up and collect the money, there was more in the box than what was needed to cover what had been taken. Rain or shine, blazing hot or freezing cold, we tended that wagon every single day. Then one day, a fella we later came to affectionately call “Pops” stopped by and informed us that it just wasn’t proper to run a fruit and vegetable stand without boiled peanuts. So, we studied up, worked on our recipes, and before long we were serving up good old plain and Cajun boiled peanuts. And just like that, a whole new chapter of our story was written.
After a while, those boiled peanuts started catching on in a big way. Before long, we had ourselves a steady crew of regulars who didn’t just like our peanuts — they flat-out loved ’em. Somewhere along the way, we got to feeling like our full-time jobs were weighing us down more than holding us up. So in the spring of 2019, we both handed in our two-week notices, took a deep breath, and jumped straight into the fire with both feet. We made up our minds right then and there that we were either going to make this “thing” work, or we were going down in flames trying. That’s when we decided to take a smaller trailer and turn it into a dedicated boiled peanut wagon. Now we weren’t just selling on the roadside — we were getting set up to take our “Soon-To-Be World Famous” boiled peanuts out into the world. Our very first event was the Bremen Rodeo with Southern Rodeo Company, sponsored by The Cowboy Shop in Carrollton. From there, we started setting up all over West Georgia, hauling that little peanut wagon from one spot to the next, chasing the dream one cup of boiled peanuts at a time. After a while, the boiled peanuts began to grow. We are selling Boiled Peanuts from Panama City, FL to Hunstville, AL to the Tennessee / Georgia line at Rodeos and Fairs and Bluegrass Festivals to Flea Markets and Shopping Center parking lots and everywhere in between. Sometimes we tent camped out of town or just slept in the Peanut Trailer, whatever it took.
